Magic Fitness: A Gamified Fitness Habit-Building Application

Improving Daily Physical Activity Levels through Gamification

Magic Fitness is a unique mobile and smartwatch application designed by Di Song, Huicong Hu, and Jie Yao. Inspired by the need to motivate busy individuals to exercise, this innovative app combines the advantages of gamification and smartwatches to encourage users to achieve their fitness goals and develop healthy habits.

Magic Fitness stands out as a gamified fitness habit-building application for smartphones and smartwatches. Its main goal is to improve users' daily physical activity levels by transforming healthy behaviors into magic energy in a game-like environment. By adopting the game form of education simulation, users' healthy actions are converted into magic energy, which is then used to cultivate magic avatars. This unique approach not only makes exercise more enjoyable but also helps users develop sustainable fitness habits.

One of the standout features of Magic Fitness is its integration with real-world charities. Users have the option to donate the magical energy they accumulate through their healthy behaviors to these charities. This not only adds a sense of purpose and accomplishment to the app but also allows users to contribute to meaningful causes. By combining gamification with charitable giving, Magic Fitness creates a holistic and rewarding fitness experience.

The application's interface and user experience have been carefully designed to ensure a seamless and engaging experience. The team utilized industry-standard design tools such as Adobe Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC, and Figma to create captivating illustrations and intuitive user interfaces. Magic Fitness is compatible with iOS and watchOS systems, making it accessible to a wide range of users.

When using Magic Fitness, users can select their avatars and set fitness goals based on their current physical health. The app's home page provides real-time updates on the avatar's status, which is synchronized with the user's real-life activities. If the avatar works for extended periods, the app will remind the user to take breaks and rest. Additionally, the home page displays the user's progress towards their daily health goals, with each healthy behavior contributing to the accumulation of magic energy and the avatar's upgrade. Users can also earn gold coins, which can be used to purchase items, change costumes, and participate in charity events.

For a comprehensive overview of their fitness journey, users can access the overview page, which displays their overall fitness status for a week or a month. The community page allows users to connect with other Magic Fitness users, share their health trends, and engage in discussions related to fitness and healthy habits.

The development of Magic Fitness was a result of extensive research and user interviews. The design team conducted in-depth interviews with target users to understand their needs for healthy behavior-building and preferences for gamified design. The application's concept was shaped by analyzing user demands and incorporating gamification theories, resulting in four gamification design methods: education simulation, quantitative data feedback, task and reward, and social interaction. The information architecture diagram and low-fidelity interaction model were produced as the outcomes of the conceptual design. The application prototype was tested for usability, and the design was optimized based on the evaluation results.

Magic Fitness was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interface, Interaction, and User Experience Design category in 2022. This prestigious award recognizes the app's well-designed, practical, and innovative approach to fitness habit-building. Magic Fitness integrates industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and a sense of fulfillment and positive feelings, contributing to a better world.

With Magic Fitness, exercise becomes a fun and rewarding experience. By combining gamification, smartwatches, and charitable giving, this application motivates users to achieve their fitness goals, develop healthy habits, and make a positive impact on the world.
